‍Matcha was founded by longtime friends and former Big 4 management consultants, Jonathan Sobin and Chris Kluesener, after personally experiencing the frustration of being renters unable to own an EV due to lack of charging access.

From 2021-2022, after experimenting with exisitng charging stations and experiencing the commonly high costs, unreliability, and inefficiencies of proprietary, closed-system technologies, they set out to build something better. Embracing open architecture and the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP), they launched MatchaOS in 2023—a vertically integrated EV charging platform purpose-built for multifamily and shared environments.

By 2024, Matcha expanded its model to include a fully outsourced charge station operator (CPO) solution with no cost to property owners, unlocking a scalable path forward for widespread adoption.

Today, Matcha is designed to eliminate pain points for both residents and property owners. For landlords, it transforms EV charging from a costly requirement into a revenue-generating amenity through a zero-cost, profit-sharing model.

The MatchaOS platform streamlines operations with dynamic pricing, smart reservations, and energy management that reduces peak usage, ensuring reliable performance with minimal downtime. For renters, it’s a seamless and affordable charging experience—removing the #1 barrier to EV adoption in multifamily housing.

Chris and Jon bring deep experience in digital infrastructure, real estate, and marketplace business models from their time at Deloitte, PwC, and successful startup ventures. They partnered with Bob Wold—former SVP of Software Engineering at Trimble—to build a technology-first, smart, and interoperable system from the ground up.

At its core, Matcha is solving a problem the founders lived: how to support renters to drive electric. The company’s mission is to eliminate that barrier for the 115 million Americans who rent their primary homes, delivering an EV charging experience built for the realities of the age of limited electrical infrastructure.
